This spacesuit, called HOPE, is on display in Texas. Astronaut Kate Rubins wore a similar hand-painted flight suit on the International Space Station.

Most astronauts wear plain white or blue spacesuits. But not U.S. astronaut Kate Rubins. She had a spacesuit with hundreds of colorful designs on it. She wore it on the International Space Station one September day in 2016. It’s one of three spacesuits made by more than 800 cancer patients, their families, and hospital staff.

NASA and the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, worked together to create the suits. Ian Cion, the head of the Space Suit Art Project, hopes the effort will inspire people and raise awareness about childhood cancer.
