Fiction’s Richest Characters

In the land of make-believe, some characters have more money than you could ever imagine! Learn about some of the richest characters in fiction as compiled by Guinness World Records.

Scrooge McDuck: $65 billion

Donald Duck’s rich uncle is famous for swimming through a vault filled with gold coins.

The price of gold depends on its weight. Say a gold coin weighing 1 ounce costs $1,690. If you bought a gold coin that weighs 1/10 of an ounce, would the cost be greater or less than the cost of the 1-ounce coin?

Smaug: $54 billion

No dragon is richer than Smaug. The slithering, fire-breathing reptile in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit likes to relax in an ancient castle surrounded by its riches.

Let’s say one room in Smaug’s castle has 100,000 gold coins. If a second room has 10 times 100,000 gold coins, write an inequality expression that shows which quantity is greater.

By day, Tony Stark runs a technology company. But when duty calls, Stark puts on his exosuit and becomes Iron Man.
