When Sally Ride blasted off in 1983, she became the first female American astronaut. Being only 32 at the time, she also became the youngest astronaut to have traveled to space.
Ride died in 2012. But this May, her likeness began flying around the world—only this time on mail! The United States Postal Service is honoring Ride with a stamp. The stamp is part of a set featuring leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
In 2001, Ride and Tam O’Shaughnessy founded Sally Ride Science, an organization that tries to spark kids’ interest in STEM.
O’Shaughnessy says Ride collected stamps as a girl. “She would be so honored to appear on a stamp!”
