Hungry Holidays

Winter means holiday celebrations—and delicious things to eat!

Worldwide, people celebrate many different winter holidays. Often, that means eating delicious food.

Jennifer Berg studies food and culture at New York University. She grew up eating latkes. These are fried potato pancakes. People eat them for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

Berg says that food can help unite people from different backgrounds.

“You may not understand a different language,” she says. “But you can understand another food.”

January 6 is Three Kings Day. It’s part of the Christmas season for Catholics. In Mexico, people celebrate by eating a sweet bread. It’s called rosca de reyes. This means “wreath of kings.” The bread is baked in an oval shape. A small figurine is hidden somewhere inside. Whoever finds the figurine is “king” for the day!

About one fourth of the world’s population will celebrate the new year on February 5! That’s when the year starts according to a calendar based on the moon. This is called the Lunar New Year. In China, people celebrate this holiday by eating dumplings at midnight. Find a coin hidden inside your dumpling? That means good fortune for next year!
