Lesson: Crayon Colors for All

Objective: Students will use number bonds to find whole-number quotients for division problems related to crayons.

Lesson Plan

    Spark Engagement.

Play the video “A Color for Everyone.” Then, before or after reading the article, spark a discussion based on the following questions:

  • What is something that makes you special or unique?
  • Why is it important to help others feel included?
  • Think about a box of 12 crayons. How many different ways could you share them equally?

Introduce the math concept and vocabulary.

  • What operations can you use number bonds with? (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Have students draw a number bond to show 4 + 4 = 8.
  • What is another equation that could represent this number bond? (Answers will vary. Possible answers: 2 × 4 = 8;
    8 − 4 = 4; 8 ÷ 2 = 4)
  • How does this number bond also represent 8 ÷ 2? (8 is divided into 2 parts, and each part represents 4.)
  • Today we are going to use number bonds to practice division.
  • Play the instructional video “Introduction to Division.”

Work through the "What to Do" box.

  • How was the divisor, 5, represented in the number bond? (as the 5 circles or parts coming from the dividend, 10)
  • How would the number bond have changed if the divisor was 2 instead of 5? (There would have been 2 parts,
and each part would represent 5.)
  • What is the inverse operation of division? (multiplication)
  • How did multiplication help us check our quotient? (Since 5 × 2 = 10, you know that 10 ÷ 5 = 2.)
  • What is another way you can check to make sure your quotient is correct? (Answers will vary. Possible answer:
Add up the parts to make sure they equal the whole.)

    Reinforce with math practice.

Have students complete problems 1 through 4 on page 7 of the article.

Differentiate & Extend

Skills Sheets: Level Down: Color By Quotient: Crayons (3.OA.A.2) | On Level: DynaDash: Division With Number Bonds (3.OA.A.2) | Level Up: Color By Remainder: Crayons (4.NBT.B.6)

SEL (Social-emotional learning activity/prompt): When Bellen realized that the peach crayon matched the skin color of most of her classmates but not hers, she said it made her feel “not as important.” Have students think about a time where they may have felt left out or made someone else feel that way. Then ask: What are some ways we can make everyone
feel included or important?

DynaMath@Home: Have students gather the following items: 24 pieces of a small object (cereal, pasta shells, beans, blocks, pennies), toothpicks, paper, and a writing utensil. Have them write 24 on the paper and place a circle around it. Then use the toothpicks to represent the branches of the number bond to show how many equal groups 24 can be broken into. Have students practice finding all of the different combinations for dividing the small objects into their equal groups.
